Let's plant a forest

We are on a mission to plant hundreds of trees over the next year, and will be looking for more ways that we can sequester more CO2 going forward. Sustainability is at the core of what we do, and there is always more that we can do.

It’s not all about great jobs and exciting projects, we’re also planting a forest!

Since the pandemic hit, we were obviously forced to work from home and as a team this meant a lot more video calls. However it also meant less travelling, more efficient use of energy, and generally less carbon emissions as a team.

We can’t tell you exactly how much (although we are working on finding ways to measure this going forward), but it has now become part of our sustainability work to be a lot more conscious about what we do as a business to impact the environment.

In the 12 months before the pandemic hit, co-founder John and I made three return trips to New York from London, and hundreds of train journeys within the UK for meetings, show visits, trade shows and other commitments. Although we paid to offset the CO2 on those flights, we acknowledge that we were contributing to the problem. I can now count on two hands the number of times I have had to go to London for work in the last 18 months. At the main office we have switched to 100% renewable energy suppliers (Octopus Energy, in case you’re interested).

We’ve also looked at other areas of the business to see where we can lessen our carbon footprint, or even better, make a positive impact.

The new platform launched in July 2021, and since then employers throughout the entertainment and live events sector have been paying subscriptions to access the Curtain Call platform - to post jobs and search for skilled talent. We call them Pioneers - they are helping to get the industry back on track, and desperately need the service we’re providing, given the freelance skills shortage.

As part of these monthly subscriptions we have pledged to plant a tree for each Pioneer, each month. At the last count (end of October) we have planted 30 trees, where they are most needed in Haiti. The project is helping local farmers plant trees that protect watersheds and improve food security and supply. Each tree sequesters 0.30 tonnes of CO2, or the equivalent to 732.9 miles in a standard car. In total that is now over 9 tonnes of CO2 that has been sequestered on behalf of our brilliant Pioneers.

Arguably this has also been one of our most productive years too, despite not actually meeting up as a team in person - it’s crazy. Having successfully bid for two separate Innovate UK grants, our team completed both projects on time and on budget, and launched the MVP of our new platform. One of these grants was from the Sustainable Innovation Fund, which really helped us zero in on areas that we could make a positive impact on not only the environment, but the industry as a whole.

This is just the start, we are on a mission to plant hundreds of trees over the next year, and will be looking for more ways that we can sequester more CO2 going forward. Sustainability is at the core of what we do, and there is always more that we can do.
