Here, photographer Matt Humphrey explains more about the shot of McKellen (above):
"I first met Ian McKellen when he was acting onstage at The Old Vic as Widow Twankie in the panto Aladdin – a role he reprised, following the roaring success of the production in the first year of Kevin Spacey's tenure as Artistic Director. Since then he has become an integral part of the X-Men global franchise, and is synonymous with the Tolkien film adaptations of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
"For someone who has so many varied and recognisable film roles, it is a true pleasure to see him tread the boards – something we are treated to every few years when he returns to the London stage. There is always a slight fear when meeting someone whose roles precede them as much as McKellen's do, but the experience of photographing him was so calm, natural, and he was most at ease with me. I like this frame as it captures a moment of contemplation – mid-crossword, and post-slumber."
And not only did we get to meet McKellen and Stewart, we also spoke to their understudies Andrew Jarvis (pictured below) and Simon Rhodes. Hear our conversation with them on our latest iTunes podcast - more info here.
