In a Middle-Eastern city, Alora, a beautiful, clever and headstrong young girl, rejects the values of her family and plans to lead a new life in London. However, if she abandons her tradition and leaves the family out of pride, they will never be able to reach her again.
Meanwhile, in London, Maria, another headstrong young woman, is fighting her own battle. Her corrupt politician father - a womaniser and a liar, courts a new party and plans to leave the sinking ship, dividing his twin daughters who, though they be the same, react to this turn of events in very different ways.
Propelled by her father's hypocrisy on matters of war, Maria - the braver, or perhaps more reckless, of the two - secretly trains to take her skills and instincts of a doctor "over there" into the field.
Alora and Maria both leave home to go to the other's at the same time and as these stories unravel, Maria and Alora bond over a family tragedy.
